Yes! You do not have to replace the whole cup when the straw wears out in Baby’s First Straw Cup. Whether you have a chewer or the straw has been loved to death, you can easily replace it by purchasing a replacement kit here.

Liquid should flow through the straw in the Dr. Brown’s Straw Cup with no issues and should not be difficult to suck. If you and your child are experiencing issues getting liquid through the straw, the valve may be on backwards. Follow these instructions to troubleshoot:

  1. Install the silicone STRAW SPOUT to the CAP by inserting it through the hole in the CAP.
  2. Pull the silicone STRAW SPOUT from above until it snaps into place.
  3. Insert the plastic STRAW TUBE into the bottom of the STRAW SPOUT.
  4. Fill CUP with liquid for feeding.
  5. Screw the CAP onto the CUP until snugly fit.

Sometimes you may find that your Dr. Brown’s Straw Cup has leaked liquid out of the top. That’s because when any closed cup has a straw, by design, pressure can build up inside the cup. Pressure builds for many reasons, but the main reasons are temperature changes or pressure changes outside of the cup (such as traveling via airplanes). To avoid this, simply keep your straw cup closed when not in use. When you go to use it, slightly unscrew the cap to release the pressure before using the straw.

The Dr. Brown’s™ MyBands™ reusable bottle labels allow you to wipe off the name on the band or make it permanent. In order to make it permanent, handwrite on your MyBands with a ballpoint pen and expose it to high heat for at least five minutes. You can do this by putting MyBands in boiling water, letting it run through the drying feature on your dishwasher, or exposing it to heat from a bottle warmer.

Dr. Brown’s™ HappyPaci™ can be used by babies from newborn to 6 months. HappyPaci pacifier is shaped like Dr. Brown’s Narrow Nipple, which helps with acceptance since it’s familiar to babies who use bottles. Always speak with your pediatrician about any concerns with particular pacifiers, when to use one and when to wean your baby.

Dr. Brown’s bottles are made of BPA-free polypropylene plastic or BPA-free, pharmaceutical-grade borosilicate glass that is heat and thermal shock-resistant. All components of the Dr. Brown’s bottle, including the vent insert, vent reservoir, travel disk, nipple collar, and cap are also BPA-free. Our nipples are made of silicone.

Over time, lots of washing and sterilizing can cause the ink to fade on the bottle vessel. The ink is non-toxic, follows stringent international standards, and poses no harm. Some tips to prevent further issues: Avoid over-sterilizing and aggressive hand scrubbing. Check out the Cleaning Tips for more info. For additional questions, our Customer Service is happy to help!

The vent system in Dr. Brown’s bottles is what gives our bottle the benefits of reduced colic, gas, spit-up and burping – which makes it a great for feeding baby. When the vent, collar, and nipple are on the bottle, it is not a sealed storage container and you may experience leaking in certain situations. Here are three solutions to leaking issues:

Leaking while feeding:

Nipple flow levels can be too fast or slow for baby. If the nipple flow level is too slow, baby will suck harder and harder to get more milk. This can push air into the vent, causing pressure to build up. That pressure may then push liquid out of the collar, causing leaking. Increasing the nipple flow level up to the next level may solve this issue.

Leaking while traveling:

Because the bottle works the way it does, it is an open system that allows liquid to drip out of the nipple when turned over. When the vent, collar and nipple are on, the bottle needs to remain upright. Placing a bottle cap over the nipple does not prevent liquid from coming out of the nipple when turned over.

  • When traveling short distances like to daycare, keep the parts on, use the included Travel Disk and keep the bottle upright to help prevent leaking.
  • When traveling longer distances, by plane, or when the bottle cannot remain upright, remove the vent, collar and nipple and screw on a Storage Travel Cap. The parts can be stored in a clean storage bag.

Leaking while preparing:

When warming a bottle or mixing formula by shaking when the parts are in, changes in pressure in the bottle may happen. This could cause leaking to occur out of the collar. When warming your bottles or shaking to mix formula, remove the parts and screw on a storage travel cap.

Some daycares do not allow any modifications to the bottle and will not remove the parts before warming. In this case, ask the daycare to loosen the collar before warming to help release pressure.

Dr. Brown’s Bottle Brush features a sponge head designed to reach into the corners of the baby bottle to gently scrub without scratching. Using a rocking/twisting motion to put it in and pull it out of the bottle can help prevent the sponge tearing. Here is a short video clip that shows the technique.

Odor, cloudiness and staining

Milk and formula can build up in the bottle and can cause a slight odor. Here’s some things you can try:

  • Odors: Odors may be removed by putting baking soda and warm water in the bottle and cleaning with a bottle brush. To get rid of stronger odors like a sour-milk smell, fill the bottle with warm water, add a teaspoon of baking soda, shake well, and let stand overnight.
  • Stains and Cloudiness: Soak bottle in a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water, and then rinse with cold water, which can help remove stains and cloudiness as well as odors.

There are three quick steps you can take to ensure your bottle parts are fully cleaned and dried to help prevent moisture build-up. Rinse after using, utilizing the Cleaning Brush, and letting the parts fully air-dry. Here is more info on each

Rinse after use

Giving the vent insert a quick rinse after feeding helps prevent formula or milk from drying and getting stuck in the parts. If the insert can’t be rinsed soon after feeding, make sure to use the wire Cleaning Brush.

Using the Cleaning Brush

Use the wire cleaning brush, hot water and dish soap to clean the inside of the vent insert as well as the straw of the reservoir. We recommend giving the vent system a quick clean with the wire brush before putting it in the dishwasher.

Letting the parts air-dry

If leftover water after washing is not allowed to fully dry, putting your bottle together and storing it can cause moisture to get trapped in the parts. Allow all the parts to air dry fully before storing. For the vent insert, lay it on its side to allow for drainage of any additional water.
